Fresh Art: For the Love of God

"For the Love of God"
The title, “For the Love of God,” comes from a question posed by Damien Hirst’s mother, “For the love of God, what are you going to do next?”

With a nod to British artist Damien Hirst, and a riff on his famous work, For the Love of God, I have created my own Memento mori. My version features costume jewelry pearls affixed to a life-size plastic human skull. The Hirst version is a platinum cast of a human skull covered with over 8,000 flawless diamonds. Hirst hired a dentist to set the teeth taken from the original skull and a team of jewelers to set the diamonds. The asking price for the Hirst skull in 2007 was £50 million. Mine will be offered for considerably less.

Mixed media assemblage, 6.375 x 9 x 9 inches.

Four pints of costume jewelry pearls acquired at an estate sale. The "pearl" neckless's, bracelets and bobbles ranged in size from the head of a pin to about a quarter inch and were thoroughly infused with a heavy dose of Estée Lauder Youth Dew.

Skull process 4x4
Step by step. The long and tedious process of attaching the “pearls” to the skull.
