On September 5, 1972 Palestinian terrorists with the Black September Organization captured and murdered 11
Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics. Kurt Strumpt, an Associated Press photographer, captured the
image of a hooded hostage-taker standing guard on a balcony at the Munich Olympic Village Israeli team quarters.
Though moving and still images of the standoff were broadcast around the world, Strumpt’s striking composition
remains the visual signature of the event.
