William Anders made his famous photograph of the Earth rising above the lunar surface while aboard Apollo 8 in
1968. Photographs taken on the moon’s surface were a favorite target of conspiracy theorists who claimed the
photographs were staged on a set and sold to the American public as the real thing. Earthrise replicates Anders’
famous photograph using a bowling ball mounted in front of black velvet, suspended above a lunar surface that is
constructed of chicken wire and tissue paper.
