Catalina Box, 1995

This box is inspired by many years visiting Catalina Island as a youth. The box is covered with a chart that my father used to teach celestial navigation. The pencil marks on the chart are his. Also included are a vintage framed hand-tinted photograph, a compass, hourglass and gyroscope. The beach glass at the base of the box represents the “jewels” that I would find as a youngster on Catalina’s beaches. The salt was distilled from water that my brother collected from Emerald Bay, our favorite cove on the island.
